What do you get a man who doesn’t want or need anything for his birthday?
What do you give to the love of your life who has overcome many trials in life?
What gift is there for a husband and father who deserves more than you can give?
A flag pole.
Yes, a flag pole. That is what I wrapped up and will present to the birthday boy tomorrow.
It’s not fancy. It’s not sentimental or expensive.
It’s simply a pole that carries a flag while bolted to our back deck.
There used to be a pole in this spot, until several months ago, when it flew its last flag. The old, tired piece of fiberglass was hanging by a thread. Nah, it was hanging by a piece of duct tape. Because that is my husband. He is a resourceful lover of thing-fixing, problem-solving, money-saving, and duct-taping.
This flag pole gift is not fancy or sentimental or expensive. But it’s him.
He keeps his family grounded and attached to the firm foundation of faith.
He protects us no matter which direction the winds of life decide to blow.
He proudly carries us, lifting us up each day.
He mounts up with wings like the stately flag pole eagle as he looks to the Lord for his strength.
And he does this all while being clever, efficient, conscientious, and using duct tape when necessary.
No, this practical gift is not sentimental or expensive. But it’s him.
And it does have that cool eagle on it. Which is totally him.
It’s also currently duct-tape-free. So, maybe it is a little bit fancy after all.
