One year since Day Zero.
One year of genetically-modified,
Cancer-fighting super cells
For my superhero.
365 days of highs and lows,
Hospital commutes,
Hospital stays,
Health issue dominoes.
Quarantining,
PICC line flushing,
Medical term googling,
Daily house cleaning,
Tears,
Questions,
Doubts,
Fears.
No getting behind the wheel.
No great outdoors.
No germs.
No restaurant meal.
Pills,
Pills,
Pills,
Appointments never-ending,
Needle-poked arms,
Med teams with skills,
Neurotoxicity in the brain,
Muscle loss and steroid gain,
Personality change,
Surprise clots in the lung and vein,
Skip-Bo and worship music playing,
Side effect note-taking,
Slow walking,
Desperate praying,
Porch-dropped meals of nourishment,
Provisions of mind-blowing proportions,
Prayers of many people,
Precious notes of encouragement.
Oh, the long-awaited return,
When air hugs
Became real hugs;
Weak immune system no longer a concern.
News of zero
Signs of disease,
Answered prayer
For the superhero.
One year since a cure?
No, just a treatment;
Another year fighting a battle
Within a bigger war.
Ahead lay years of scans,
Of biopsies and bloodwork.
Close monitoring
Is in the plans.
But what a growing year
Of relearning trust,
And the nitty-gritty
Of how to persevere.
One year
Of
Blessings
Galore.
So much
To
Be
Thankful
For.
Every day of every year,
In the highs and the lows,
In the healing and the setbacks,
The Great Physician is always near.
Physically mending,
Cell defending,
Human limit transcending,
Cancer suspending,
Need attending,
Grace extending,
Strength unending,
Relationship tending,
Promises unbending,
Praise ascending,
For on Him
We
Are
Depending.
365 days.
From Day Zero to always.
