It was like an episode of The Twilight Zone. I was driving down a busy road on a partly sunny day. This multilane portion of the turnpike has many businesses that line its sidewalks, and often I’ll see pedestrians. However, on this particular morning, I did a double take as I approached a crowd standing on the sidewalk.
First of all, there were many. While odd, it’s nothing extremely crazy.
They all appeared to be around the same age; maybe early twenties. Again, nothing to write home about.
They weren't moving and were facing the same direction. Okay, things were getting a little weirder.
Each had a phone held up, capturing video perhaps. But, here’s the kicker; when I turned and looked in the vicinity of their captured attention, I saw nothing.
I slowed a few MPHs and, using safe limits while operating a moving automobile, I looked again. My eyeballs urgently scanned the other side of the road. But I saw only the usual establishments and passing vehicles.
I drove through a twilight zone, I tell you. Like a school zone, but creepier.
I resumed normal speed and reached for my glasses - which, I assure you, I’m not required to wear while driving.
Was I just subjected to a frequency age test, but for vision?
Similar to when high frequencies can no longer be detected as our ears age, was I too old to see what those Gen Zers saw?
No, surely not. It was definitely a twilight zone.
I drove onward, peering through my progressive lenses while processing. If I had the hindsight I have now back when I was in my early twenties, what would I do differently?
What decisions would I change? What mistakes would I make right? What other paths would I follow?
What would I do differently? Nothing. Because the sight I had, whether very poor or 20/20, has shaped the vision I have today. And the One who makes straight my paths has led me here to this place where I’m meant to be…
To a busy street in this beautiful community on a lovely day, where I get to live this sweet, messy, ordinary life with extraordinary people.
Yes, I believe I can see just fine.
And then, I made a mental note to check the news later, because that was just weird.
