Stepping outdoors in springtime
Is slipping into a bath of bubbles.
Tension melts and dissipates,
As warm sunshine washes away troubles.
The red-bellied woodpecker’s staccato
Is the soft, fizzy bath foam,
While the jazz tunes are supplied
By other birds who call this backyard home.
The white-throated sparrow,
And Carolina wren,
The tufted titmouse,
And American robin,
Woodpeckers of three;
Red-bellied, hairy, and downy,
Eastern phoebe, northern cardinal,
And Carolina chickadee.
The harmony is picked up by the breeze,
Playing wind chimes at a laid-back pace,
While the distant lawn mower
Provides a gentle humming bass.
And those base notes of freshly cut grass
Fill the air with its comforting scent.
While the sweet top notes of azaleas
Offer its fragrant, calming compliment.
Muscles of both the body and mind
Can’t help but loosen and decompress,
While soaking in this springtime bath,
Where thoughts can quietly effervesce.
Yet, life is sprinkled with allergies and ironies.
Hence, this outdoor bath, to soothe and mellow,
May require a second indoor bath,
To wash away the pollen yellow.
