This is the face of FOMO.
In case you’ve ever wondered what this commonly referenced emotion may look like, this is a picture of the “fear of missing out.”
This photo also portrays a snapshot of the long-ago, very much missed, lost days of naptime. Let’s take a brief moment of silence to acknowledge this loss, shall we?
Sigh.
Okay. Moving on.
Naptime is obviously not for the FOMO-inclined. So, on this particular day, when I discovered my 4-year-old’s sleeping head wedged several inches above the floor, between a door frame and a partially opened door, I marveled at the sight.
I don’t remember what was taking place downstairs, but this boy wanted to be a part of it. So much so, that he positioned himself in a way that he could listen from afar and be prepared to join us in the hopeful chance he was summoned.
Oh, how there have been times my heart has taken this exact posture, uncomfortably contorted in fear and longing.
The fear of missing out on..
the invitation,
the right path,
the right decision,
an opportunity,
an experience,
a connection,
a calling,
inclusion,
acceptance,
recognition,
what everyone else is doing.
But I can’t ignore one very important detail of this image. My son is fast asleep.
May we find rest and peace in knowing we are right where we need to be in this moment. And may we give our fears to the One who holds our weary head, no matter what door jamb it may be stuck in.
