A little dirt don’t hurt. Sure.
But what about a lot of dirt? What about truckloads of dirt? What about 26 (and counting) dump truck loads of dirt, to be precise?
A little dirt may not hurt anything. But a lot of dirt can overwhelm, stress out, and… hurt a little. Perhaps it’s only hurting the aesthetics of one’s backyard, but still.
Yes, I’m speaking from experience.
You see, my husband has a vision. For the past few years, our backyard has been a work in progress. A gradual work in slow progress. Because, when you are receiving free dirt, you are at the mercy of the backyard jobs of others.
With one look at the deer-in-the-headlights expression that must have been plastered on my face as I walked outside to head to work one morning, the young guy behind the wheel of yet another dirt delivery sitting in my driveway quickly offered comforting news.
“Ma’am, this is the last load I’m able to bring. I’m cutting your husband off,” he said with a chuckle.
That moment of comfort was blissful, but it was brief. Little did I know, there are other companies willing to dump their dirt in our backyard. Many others.
A parade of big trucks with dirt have been backing down our driveway ever since.
And while I may not fully see the vision yet, my husband does. And I have to trust in what he sees, that I cannot.
He looks out there and sees a promised land; a land flowing with milk and honey, carpeted with lush green grass and lined with bald cypress trees.
I look out there and see a dry and weary land; a lumpy land that smells faintly of farm and gets tracked throughout my house.
It’s all in how we look at it. While our perceptions may be unique, ultimately our visions are the same.
Life is dirty, marriage is messy, parenting is chaotic. But when our sights are set on the big picture - the promised land - it's true... all that dirt just doesn’t hurt quite as much.
